Carloforte Shipwright
The trade of shipbuilding is an art. It’s expensive and not many people can afford the cost to repair a boat. In the town of Carloforte on the island San Pietro, Lucio met with a local shipbuilder and his student.
Shipwright, Tonino Sanna (man with glasses), and his student, Giacomo Pintus (man with hat) expressed the difficulty of finding customers these days. There are not as many shipwrights now as there used to be. In this day and age, most boats are built of fibreglass because they are low maintenance and durable, hence, fibreglass boats don’t deteriorate like wooden boats.
Though shipbuilding has changed over the years, the craft and its origin still remain a fascination.
