This Week in Lampedusa, Lucio Interviewed Giacomo Sferlazzo of Askavusa Lampedusa

Giacomo is from the island and has been active with the cultural association, Askavusa, for about five years. Askavusa supports immigrants, unions, arts, theatre, etc in Lampedusa. The association’s unique building is built out of parts from immigrant boats and displays everyday objects previously owned by immigrants such as toothbrushes, pots, medicine, sacred books and so on.

One of Giacomo’s projects is opening a theatre and bringing back the Sicilian tradition, opera dei pupi. Opera de pupi is part of the UNESCO World Heritage.
